Manaleo is committed to maintaining the authenticity and purity of traditional Hawaiian folk music. Emphasis is placed on performing songs in the old tradition of the native people of Hawaii to continue the somewhat forgotten art form which includes the "Kihoalu" or "Slack Key" style of guitar playing, while carrying on the styles brought on by artists such as Johnny Almeida and Gabby Pahinui and auntie Genoa Keawe. Many modern day music groups have gone from these traditions to perform a more popular style of music that includes Reggae and Jazz styles infused into Hawaiian music. The Hollywood era of the 1930's, 40's, 50's & 60's brought the "Hapa Haole" style of music that utilized a Swing beat and brought on songs like "Little Grass Shack", "Were going' to a Hukilau", "Blue Hawaii", "Tiny Bubbles" and the like. Our focus is to bring the MELE of yesteryear back into the 21st century so that the current generations can experience the magic and Aloha Spirit that these timeless, traditional songs carry with them. We invite you to experience this music and get a taste of what the songs are about; creation, spirit, love and nature, all of which were gifts from the great creator AKUA. PILIALOHA MAU LOA: Album #1
Our first album, "Pilialoha Mau Loa", was recorded live and was a spur-of-the-moment thing where we decided to put on CD a live performance we did in St. Helena, California. Their were no 2nd takes or re-do's and was purely how the music was played. At the time were known as "Bruddah E & the Akahai 3". This un-polished, un-rehearsed recording was like how the Hawaiians did at Luau's, weddings and parties in times past. It expresses how the culture accepts the purity of the music as it is performed, mistakes and all! PUA KENIKENI: Album #2 As of January '06, we have been in the studio recording our second album. The title of the album will be "Pua Kenikeni" which is named after a flower that grows in the islands. The album will contain original tracks as well as familiar tracks to those who know traditional Hawaiian music. We anxiously await its introduction in September of 2007. The album will be released for worldwide distribution in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Pacific Rim, Australia and New Zealand. OKIKA 'O KA 'INO: Album # 3 Our third album "Okika O' ka 'Ino" is in the works. This will be an all original compilation album reflecting our commitment and desire to create music in the traditional Hawaiian form. Its release should be the 1st quarter of 2008.
